Johnny Depp filled in for Elvis Costello during a recording session for Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, a forthcoming album of previously unrecorded Bob Dylan material. According to Rollling Stone, Depp, who had stopped by to visit producer T-Bone Burnett, took up guitar for the track “Kansas City” after Costello was unable to make it to the L.A. studio.

As previously reported, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes is set to feature Costello, Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Dawes’ Taylor Godlsmith and Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens. The album, which has the blessing of Dylan himself, will include a number of a songs written—though never recorded—by the singer-songwriter during his famed Basement Tapes era.
