John Legend was joined by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Alicia Chakour and a number of other artists last night for a very special performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The R&B singer and his guests took the stage to perform Marvin Gaye’s groundbreaking, politically charged 1971 album What’s Going On in its entirety.

The show also featured songs from Gaye’s pre- What’s Going On catalog, with Jones taking up the role of Tammi Terrell during the duet numbers (the Dap Kings backed the singer as well). In addition, the performance included a few spoken word interludes from the night’s host, poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph, who related the classic album back to modern day issues like the war in Afghanistan and the unrest in Ferguson, MO. Legend also sported a “Don’t Shoot” t-shirt throughout the night.
