In an upcoming feature with Sports Illustrated, writer Lee Jenkins revealed that Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra almost turned down his initial interview with the Heat in 1995 because he had tickets to a Grateful Dead concert.

“He only applied for the Heat’s video coordinator position in 1995 as part of a bet with his German teammates. When a club official called with a date for an interview, Spoelstra was inclined to pass because he had tickets to a Grateful Dead concert,” Jenkins says.

Since arriving at the Heat in 1995, Spoelstra ascended from an entry level position to the head coach, which he took over from Pat Riley in 2008. He led the team to two straight NBA titles as head coach in 2012 and 2013 and was an assistant coach on the 2006 championship team. Spoelstra has amassed 314 wins in his six seasons as head coach and his 62.4% winning percentage ranks as the best in franchise history.
