Zac Brown Band threw their annual Southern Ground Music and Food Festival in Charleston, SC this weekend. As has become tradition over the years, the band wasted little time filling their two headlining sets with a slew of special guests including John Popper, Darrell Scott, Luther Dickinson, Warren Haynes and many more.

On opening night, October 11, Darrell Scott added guitar to “It’s the Whiskey That Eases the Pain” before John Popper joined Scott and the ZBB for The Outlaws’ “Freeborn Man,” Scott’s own “I Wish” and Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.” Dickinson joined in following intermission along with Popper for a high-energy jam on Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.”

October 12 started with a sit-in from Atlanta local and pal of ZBB Donald Dunlavey on their own “I Play the Road.” Warren Haynes and Dunlavey would add a double-guitar attack to the following “Statesboro Blues” before ZBB closed the first portion of the final night with “Highway 20 Ride” and a rare early placement of “Chicken Fried.”

The acoustic mini-set featured an instrumental jam with Bela Fleck and Zac Brown before the ensemble transitioned into a pair of Carolina-related tunes in Ryan Adams’ “Oh My Sweet Carolina” and James Taylor’s “Carolina In My Mind.” While Adams and Taylor are referring to North Carolina, the renditions were well received.

ZBB closed the show and weekend with takes on Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience,” Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” a mashup of John Mayer’s “Neon” and “Isn’t She Lovely” with Bela Fleck and a finale of “Enter Sandman,” among others.
