Phil Lesh and Friends kicked off their 10-show residency at the Capitol Theatre with a “Phil-o-Ween” performance at the Port Chester, NY venue last night. This incarnation of the group, which also features John Kadlecik, Dan Lebowitz, Scott Law, Rob Barraco and Joe Russo, got started with a “Cryptical Envelopment” that segued into “Shakedown Street” before morphing into “Casey Jones.” “Deal” and “Doin’ That Rag” were then followed by a take the Reverend Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” that played into a set-closing “The Other One.”

The music never stopped during most of the second set, which got started with a “St. Stephen” that jammed into a fantastic rendition of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” that featured some noteworthy singing by Law. The tune then turned into another cover, as the band switched gears into the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” After a brief pause, the ball got rolling again with “New Speedway Boogie” before continuing on with “Eyes of the World.” The song then seamlessly moved into a “Dark Star” that ended up sandwiching around a surprisingly spooky “Fire On The Mountain.” The set finally came to a close with everyone on stage singing in unison for “I Know You Rider.” Lesh then returned to give his traditional donor rap, and the night wrapped up for good with a fitting rendition of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.”

Lesh, Kadlecik, Lebowitz, Law, Barraco and Russo will return to the Capitol Theatre tonight for the final show of this weekend and the second show Lesh’s 10-night residency. The lineups for the Phil and Friends shows will differ each weekend, but you can get a comprehensive list of who’s playing here.
