Umphrey’s McGee closed their two-night Beacon Theatre run with another two sets featuring spot appearances from sax player and longtime collaborator Joshua Redman. The California-based musician joined the band for the closing segment of the first set but not before Umphrey’s delivered their most impressive run of the night (and possibly the weekend) with the cohesive opening run.

After “In the Kitchen” opened the show, the band quickly segued into a “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” that featured a nod to Jerry Garcia and possibly the impending Grateful Dead reunion in Chicago as the group delved into a “Mind Left Body” jam. The group switched gears as they finished the “Wappy Sprayberry” from the previous night before dropping back into the end of “Tinkle’s.” Redman then joined in on several tunes in the first set including the instrumental “Great American” and newer “Made to Measure,” which featured Jeff Coffin on the studio recording.

The band closed the set with one of the first tunes they ever rehearsed with Redman as “Der Bluten Kat” closed with a version of “Yoga Pants” played in a different key sandwiched in between the two improv sections.

Set two started with a lengthy “JaJunk,” “The Floor,” the second “Full Frontal” ever and a jammed out “Conduit” before just the second “Where is My Mind?” ever. Someone in the audience threw a drink at Joel Cummins from the crowd, prompting Brendan Bayliss to change the lyrics to the Pixies song to “where is the motherfucker who threw the drink on stage?” Joshua Redman then joined the fray to close the second set with “Intentions Clear,” a track he played on originally on Safety in Numbers. That jam led into Miles Davis’ “In a Silent Way,” just the first time since 2007. “Blue Echo” and a fun “Bad Friday” closed the set. The band returned without Redman to close the weekend with “Layla.”

Umphrey’s returns to the stage tonight at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY with special guest Joshua Redman.
