Travis ‘Trumpet Black’ Hill, member of the New Birth Brass Band, Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet and his own Heart Attacks band died today at the age of 28, according to NOLA.com.

Hill was in Japan where he was scheduled to play a run of shows when an infection set in after a dental procedure. The infection spread to his heart and stopped it. He died after being rushed to the hospital.

Hill is cousins of Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews (Hill played in Trombone Shorty’s first band), James Andrews and Glen David Andrews. He is also the grandson of New Orleans great Jessie Hill. Hill has also toured as a member of Glen David Andrews’ band and with the Hot 8 Brass Band. Most recently, he performed with the New Breed Brass Band on the opening day of Jazz Fest.

“Today my heart is heavy with the loss of my little cousin, more like my little brother,” said Glen David Andrews. “I love him, I will always love him and never let his memory fade away.”

Troy Andrews took to Facebook to share a photo of his cousin.
