My Morning Jacket kicked off their The Waterfall Tour with an intimate show at the Georgia Theater in Athens, GA. The stop marked MMJ’s first performance at the 1000-capacity venue since their 2008 outing in support of Evil Urges.

Last night’s tour opener signaled the return of the band’s “Spontaneous Curation Series,” in which fans request rarities via MMJ’s online forum. The show’s deep cuts included “Heartbreakin’ Man” from their 1999 debut The Tennessee Fire, as well as the first rendition of the Z track “First Knot Comes Loose” since 2012, with the latter tune segueing into a monstrous “I Will Sing You Songs” that faded out with an extended jam. As expected, MMJ also worked plenty of tunes from their new album The Waterfall into the concert.

My Morning Jacket will continue their tour this weekend with performances at Knoxville’s Tennessee Theatre and Gulf Shores, AL’s Hangout Music Festival.
