Phish returned to The Forum just outside of Los Angeles, CA last night and while the two sets didn’t feature the expansive playing displayed at Shoreline, the band still managed to deliver several standout moments, including the very first note of the evening.

The quartet hit the stage to the narration of “Martian Monster” from the Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House, which they covered on Halloween in Las Vegas. The group then launched into the track, with the now-famed “your trip is short” sample playing as the group climbed to the crescendo.

A focused, yet cohesive “Down with Disease” followed, marking the most expansive playing of the first set that would also include a closing pairing of “Ya Mar” and “Walls of the Cave.” Earlier in the set, the group had some fun with a pair of notable teases, as Anastasio touched on a bit of “We’re Off to See the Wizard” during his solo in “Limb By Limb” and McConnell delivered the theme from I Dream of Jeannie during “Ya Mar.”

Much like “Blaze On” did the previous night, “No Men In No Man’s Land” led off the second set and proved to be a worthy jam vehicle as the group once again stretched out the tune with a rock-focused approach to the jam. A brief “Carini” quickly gave way to “Tweezer,” which featured Anastasio and Gordon riffing off each other. The band would go into jukebox mode for a brief time after that, only stepping outside of form during “Roggae.”

The closing “Slave to the Traffic Light” proved to be one of the most patient moments of the night, as Anastasio took his time exploring every nook and cranny of his solo as the group built to the finale. Phish returned for a particularly engaging “You Enjoy Myself” which found Anastasio standing behind Mike Gordon, with his guitar in front of the bassist during his solo. Notably absent from the show was “Tweezer Reprise,” which the group has been known to make up for in the shows that followed.

Next up for Phish is a pair of shows in Texas with stops in Austin and Grand Prairie beginning Tuesday.
