Umphrey’s McGee marked their return to Grand Rapids with one of their most inventive setlists of the run as they delivered two sets of rarities and unique transitions.

Among the highlights was the newer “No Diablo,” which, in a rare moment, featured a lengthy improv jam. Brendan Bayliss also broke out the acoustic guitar for Crosby, Stills and Nash’s “Southern Cross,” just the second time Umphrey’s McGee has played the song, as it originated at the 2014 Brendan and Jake Holiday Show.

The second started off with a selection of cuts from the band’s Raw Stewage Quarter at UMBowl, with the newer “Remind Me” making the cut as well as “Cut the Cable,” which turned into a tune on the band’s latest Similiar Skin. “Gents,” from a past UMBowl, also popped up in the set before the band transitioned into the final part of “Pay the Snucka,” marking one of the few times the band has only played one part of the live staple.

The show closed with a take on “Rock the Casbah,” just the second of 2015 and a rare closing slot for the popular instrumental, “Glory.” Next up for Umphrey’s is a show at Iroquois Amphitheater in Louisville, KY.
