Nicole Atkins sat in with The Avett Brothers at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony SummerStage on Sunday night. The singer emerged near the end of The Avett Brothers’ set for a cover of Woody Guthrie’s Gamblin’ Man that included a bit of Curtis Mayfield’s “Movin’ On Up.”

Atkins, who grew up a few miles away from The Stone Pony, opened the night with her band, which included Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Scott Metzger. She has deep roots to the Avetts, dating back to her days attending college with Avett Brothers members Scott Avett and Bob Crawford. An early supporter of the trio, she helped them land some early Jersey gigs and shared a bill with the indie-folk band and Leon Russell at The Stone Pony in 2004.

The Avett Brothers will perform at Cleveland, OH’s Jacobs Pavilion At Nautica tomorrow. Meanwhile, Atkins will appear at Huntsville, UT’s Snowbasin tomorrow.
