Dead & Company continued their tour with the first of three shows at Madison Square Garden (the band will play tonight as well as next weekend) as the band celebrated Halloween in New York with what was originally their first announced show.

The lengthy show, which finished just before midnight, saw the band offer up takes on Grateful Dead classics as well as a couple of covers. For the vocal duties, John Mayer took the lead early on, shouldering the load for “Brown Eyed Woman” after helping Bob Weir with the opening “Jack Straw.” Mayer would also lead the band on “Althea” and the set-closing “Deal.”

The second set was dominated vocally by Weir, with the guitarist leading the band through cuts like “Truckin’” as well as the blues tune “Wang Dang Doodle,” “Estimated Prophet” and “Eyes” before Mayer took the lead on “Lady with a Fan.” Mayer and Jeff Chimenti would team up with Weir later on for “I Know You Rider” and the set closed with a pair of tunes led by Weir, “Morning Dew” and an appropriate “One More Saturday Night.”

As is customary with Dead-related Halloween shows, the show closed with Weir and Mayer teaming up for a cover of “Werewolves of London” after some howling prior to the tune, with Kreutzmann and Hart encouraging the crowd to join in.

Dead & Co return to the MSG stage tonight.
