Last night at The Hall at MP in Brooklyn, legendary Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin celebrated his 84th birthday with a performance that included openers Mihali Savoulidis and Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein.
Savoulidis, who fronts and plays guitar for Vermont’s Twiddle, sat in with Ranglin for an encore performance of “54-46 (That’s My Number),” a reggae/ska tune first recorded by Toots & the Maytals and subsequently covered several times, including an instrumental version by Ranglin on his 1996 album Below the Bassline.
In a recent video, Savoulidis discussed the impact that Ranglin’s playing has had on his career as a guitarist, saying that when he first heard a song by the Jamaican legend, he listened to him exclusively for a time and that he inspired Savoulidis to continue pursuing lead guitar playing. “Ernest means everything to me and my guitar playing,” he says.
