Pearl Jam marked their return to Wrigley Field with the first of two shows at the iconic Chicago stadium last night. Among the highlights, a 33-song, career-spanning set that included appearances from close friends of the band Steve Gleason as well as a proposal from Army Sergeant Kyle Johnson.

The band kicked things off with an opening “Low Light” and “Release” before moving into the first cover of the Beatles’ “Rain” since November 20, 2015 and just the eighth performance of the tune all-time. The rest of the set included a special version of “Light Years” dedicated to Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie, who is battling terminal brain cancer, as well as the more rare “I Got Shit” and a pair of covers—Dylan’s “Masters of War” and Jackson Browne’s “I Am a Patriot.”

The surprises came to start the encore as an opening “Bee Girl” was followed by a special on-stage proposal from Army Sergeant Kyle Johnson during “Just Breathe.” Vedder then celebrated the new couple with a slowed down, acoustic rendition of “I Believe in Miracles.” Pearl Jam then welcomed out longtime friend and fan of the band Steve Gleason to address the crowd before “Inside Job.”

After a second encore, the band returned for a rare third encore, as Eddie Vedder played his ode to the Chicago Cubs, “All the Way,” for the first time since the band last played Wrigley Field, where Vedder performed the song with late Cubs legend Ernie Banks on stage. The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” closed the show.

Pearl Jam will return to Wrigley tomorrow night.
