After an opening night that saw the band pay tribute to their 2014 Chilling Thrilling set and deliver a couple of bustouts along with a mega “Golden Age,” Phish returned to the MGM Grand Garden Arena last night for the second of their four night run.

Among the highlights from round two include yet another callback to that Halloween set two years ago with an opening rendition of “The Birds,” played just three times ever with the second live performance coming at SPAC in July.

From there, the quartet was off and running with a cohesive first set that touched on tunes like “Kill Devil Falls,” “555” and a relaxed “Roggae.” The following “Gumbo” featured some surprise improv as the song ventured outside its typical modern-era structure for a nine-minute version.

The set took on a decidedly rock-oriented feel with later takes on “Wilson,” “Maze,” “Wingsuit” and the Big Boat anthem “More” to round out the set.

The centerpiece of the show came with the opening pairing of “Mercury” and “Piper” which combined to stretch over the 30-minute mark as the Big Boat castoff once again delivered a strong version leading into the reliable improv vehicle “Piper.” A rare appearance from “Scents and Subtle Sounds” proved a nice gateway between “Piper” and the “Tweezer” that followed.

A particularly spacey “Tweezer” bled into Page McConnell’s Big Boat contribution in “I Always Wanted It This Way” as the pulsing, driving tune gave way to some more improvisation before the set wrapped up with “The Horse,” “Silent in the Morning” and “Golgi Apparatus.” Phish later returned for a two-song encore of the Stones’ “Shine a Light” and “Tweezer Reprise.”

Phish returns to Vegas for night three tonight.
