Phish frontman Trey Anastasio embarked on a short solo acoustic run last night, beginning at the Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton, MA. The night, which marked the first of three such performances, was a rare full-show solo acoustic offering from Anastasio, and the musician filled the evening with first-time solo arrangements of Phish tunes, rarities and even the debut of a new song.

The show opened up with Anastasio’s solo debut of “Discern,” a song that had been passed between Phish and his solo band but hadn’t been seen in full since Phish played it in August 2003. (Anastasio played the intro with a full orchestra at Bonnaroo 2004; the orchestral version of the song also appears on his 2004 release Seis de Mayo.) The set also featured Anastasio’s acoustic debut of the rare Phish number “Walfredo,” along with the revival of a few Phish ballads that haven’t been seen in years, including the first “Anything But Me” since August 2011 and the first “All of These Dreams” since October 2010.

Near the middle of the set, Anastasio forgot the lyrics to “Steam” and called out to lyricist Tom Marshall. The guitarist also ran through more common tunes like “Farmhouse,” “Theme From the Bottom,” “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan,” “Backwards Down the Number Line,” and Big Boat track “Miss You,” plus the live debut of “Tree” from his 2013 Record Store Day release Blue Ash And Other Suburbs and the night rounded out with an encore of classic Phish cuts “Sample in a Jar,” “Wilson” and “Bouncing Around the Room.”

Anastasio continues his solo acoustic run tomorrow, March 10, at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, NY, a venue where Anastasio played his very first orchestral show in 2001 with the Vermont Youth Symphony.
