Gov’t Mule brought their tour to the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans last night as the festivities for this year’s Jazz Fest kicked off around the city. The show, which featured support from Soulive, saw the headlining band welcome several guests throughout, including members of the opening band and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, among others.

Mule kicked off the night with a few songs featuring the Leevee Horns, including a cover of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.” The horns would then stick around for “Down & Out in New York City” with Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone filling in for Matt Abts. Later in the first set, Soulive’s Eric Krasno, who has sat in with Mule several times recently as his solo band opened for them during a short run, along with his bandmate Neal Evans, came out with blues harmonica player Smoky Greenwell and Heartbreakers bassist Rob Blair for “The Spider and The Fly.” Mule then closed out the set with two songs from their upcoming record, the title track “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” and lead single “Stone Cold Rage.”

Warren Haynes and company opened up the second set with their cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” and the band soon brought Greenwell back out with Alvin Youngblood Hart for “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and “The Hunter.” Finishing the rest of the performance without any more help, Mule rounded out the show with an extended encore featuring Neil Young’s “Rocking in the Free World” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun.”
