Last night, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band honored Tom Petty with a cover of his classic “Breakdown.” The tribute took place at the outdoor space located at San Rafael, CA’s Terrapin Crossroad as part of “Shelter From the Storm: A Hurricane Relief Benefit.”

As Deadheadland reports, Midnight North kicked off the program with a late-afternoon set and brought out Twiddle’s Mihali Savoulidis for a few numbers, including Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s “Carry On” and Twiddle’s “When It Rains It Pours.” Lesh also emerged at the end of Midnight North’s opening spot for one of their originals, “Greene County.”

Continuing a string of recent collaborations, Weir and Lesh performed with Midnight North throughout the second half of the concert, kicking things off with a version of “Playing in the Band” that wrapped around the before-mentioned “Breakdown.” After a version of “Mr. Charlie,” Savoulidis returned for another classic, “Scarlet Begonias.”

Next, Weir and Lesh offered a duo version of the early ’70s Dead chestnut “Cassidy” and played with Midnight North’s Grahame Lesh and Elliott Peck on “Uncle John’s Band,” before Peter Rowan joined Lesh and Weir for his own “Swimming in the Deep Blue Sea” and a cover of The Band’s “The Weight.” The benefit then came to a close with a version of the Old and In the Way staple “Moonlight Midnight,” featuring Rowan, Weir, Lesh, Savoulidis and the members of Midnight North.

Weir will perform at his Mill Valley, CA club Sweetwater Music Hall this evening.
