Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner have come together with over a hundred other musicians to launch a collaborative collection of artists called PEOPLE, which will encourage spontaneous musical collaborations and will be the basis of a new online music platform along with an upcoming studio residency and two-day music event in Germany.

PEOPLE revolves around Vernon and the Dessners and their circle of musician collaborators. The collective started at a 2016 event in Berlin along with Nadine and Tom Nichelberger and will return to the German city this August 12–20 for a weeklong residency at Funkhaus, a collection of studios and music spaces. On August 19 and 20, PEOPLE will open the studio doors for an array of free public performances at Funkhaus.

PEOPLE has also launched the beta version of its free digital music platform, which will house the collaborative music from studio sessions and live performances, plus essays, videos, podcasts and more from the collective. The platform, which will officially launch in August, currently offers an EP from Big Red Machine, featuring Vernon, the Dessners, members of The National and more.

“We are a steadily growing group of international artists who have come together to create and share our work freely, with each other and everyone,” PEOPLE’s introductory statement reads. “It was born of a wish to establish an independent and nurturing space in which to make work (generally around music) that is collaborative, spontaneous and expressive in nature and where all unnecessary distractions or obstacles that get in the way are removed. PEOPLE is for the benefit and development of the artists involved and just as importantly, for those who would like to access and enjoy the output. It is as much about the process of making work and showing all that openly, as the final outcome.”
