Brandi Carlile brought her tour to Los Angeles on Friday night for a show at the Greek Theatre, and the singer-songwriter welcomed a few guests throughout the night, including My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James, who helped out during Carlile’s encore on a two-song tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, who passed away last week.

Earlier in the performance, Carlile welcomed out Shooter Jennings for “The Joke,” a cut off her latest album By the Way, I Forgive You, which Jennings co-produced. Carlile also fit back-to-back covers of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” and Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” into the set.

For Friday’s encore, Carlile brought out James and members of indie-folk outfit Darlingside and announced that they were going to “attempt” a tribute to Aretha Franklin. The collective then launched into Franklin’s “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” following up the soulful tune with Franklin’s classic “Respect.”

James and Carlile have shared the stage before, with the two singers trading sit ins at last year’s LOCKN’ Festival. In a recent Relix interview, James spoke about his admiration for Carlile, saying, “Whenever I see Brandi, we always try to get together and sing. She’s a force of nature.”
