Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey turns 20 this year and there’s a lot to catch up on. For starters, the jazz group is now the trio of Chris Combs on guitar and steel guitar, Josh Raymer on drums, and last original member Brian Haas on keyboards. And their new studio album, Worker, is a work of steely electronic music, albeit with the band’s trademark warmth shining through. The LP is heavy for a Jacob Fred album, but they’ll help you lift it up. Haas’s “Betamax,” with its voice-like synth, delayed guitar and crushing drums, is at once frightening, a celebration and a dance number. “Hey Hey NSA,” written by Haas and Combs, begins with just electronic sounds but turns out to be a sly, slow, funk number with alarming moments thrown in. And “Say Nothing,” which moves between vibes like childlike, circusy, dark and soothing, ultimately feels good, just like Jacob Fred.
