A new incarnation of Topaz kicks off its national tour tonight at Starr Hill in Charlottesville, VA. Original members Topaz McGarrigle (saxophone) and Mark Tewar Tewarson (guitar) will be joined by newcomers Stephen Roberson (drums, formerly of Project Logic), Borahm Lee (keyboards) and Stu Brooks (bass). Its been difficult to keep the same band together in New York City, with the high cost of living and constant musical, social and chemical distractions, says Topaz. But with that over, were really ready to take the music into some new directions; from dub to afrobeat and other dance rhythms.
After a number of headlining dates in the Southeast, Topaz will join The Wailers for 18 dates throughout the Northwest and Colorado. The tour concludes March 8 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, with Topaz and Umphrey’s McGee playing interlocking sets.
