John Scofield, who spent much of the fall performing in more traditional jazz settings, performed two Southern California dates with his groove quartet, the John Scofield Band this past weekend. On Saturday at the Los Angeles House of Blues, Scofield who will next gig in a duo with Charlie Haden at New York’s Blue Note on Thursday and Friday, followed up the JSB performance by sitting with Soulive during ‘What You See’ and his own ‘Hottentot.’ Soulive had opened its set with a guest appearance by Talib Kweli who performed ‘Bad Boys For Life’ during ‘Steppin’.’ The Scofield Band’s new bassist Mark Kelly later joined in for the ‘Tuesday Night’s Squad’ closer, after which Adam Deitch (who performs both with Sco and Lettuce) appeared for the ‘Do It Again’ encore along with Lettuce bassist Erick ‘E.D.’ Coomes.
