The Allman Brothers Band opened the first show of its annual Beacon Theater run last night in New York City. The band set the tone immediately by charging into ‘Mountain Jam’ which in turn yielded to a version of ‘I Walk On Guilded Splinters’ with Gregg Allman on vocals (a version of this song appears on Duane Allman’s Anthology Vol. 2 with Johnny Jenkins). Other notable moments included a version of Big Bill Broonzy’s ‘Key to the Highway’ sung by Chris Robinson as well as the band’s take on ‘Afro Blue’ (a song that the group’s guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have long performed with Gov’t Mule and the Derek Trucks Band but not with the ABB. This then segued into a set-closing ‘Mountain Jam,’ setting a high mark for the first of the nine Beacon dates.
