On Friday night Umphrey’s McGee delivered a noteworthy performance at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. In the first set the band inserted ‘Glory’ into the middle of ‘Divisions’ (a rare combo that also appears on the fan club release, Local Band Does Oklahoma) and late in the second set The Talking Heads’ ‘Making Flippy Floppy’ was plopped into the middle of the UM concert staple ‘Hurt Bird Bath.’ However, it was early in the second set, as the band was moving out of ‘Robot World,’ that UM history took flight. McGee bassist Ryan Stasik unplugged his bass and waited as the UM crew moved guitarist Jake Cillinger’s mike stand to the center of the stage. Then Phil Lesh took center stage and jammed with the band for a while before moving into, ‘Franklin’s Tower.’ Cinninger and (founding member and other guitarist) Brendan Bayliss each took soaring solos over the bubbling drive of Lesh’s bass. The UM tour continues tonight at the Soho Restaurant and Music Club in Santa Barbara. Report by Rob Turner
