Soon after we reported on the Hot Buttered Rum String Bands opening gig for Honkytonk Homeslice, a second HBRSB story crossed our desk. On Saturday the band sold out its debut appearance at the Great American Music Hall. To mark the occasion Mike Marshall (David Grisman Quintet, Montreux) and Chris Thile (Nickel Creek) appeared with the group over the course of the nights two sets. Highlights included a take on Norwegian Wood during the first set along with versions of ‘Hobo Song’ and ‘Cumberland Blues’ to close out set two. For an encore, the group then invited its crew and friends on stage for an acoustic version of ‘I’ll Fly Away.’ While we think of it, for a final Hot Buttered Rum String Band note, its song ‘Three Point Two’ landed at #19 on our top Radio Tracks of 2004.
