Last nights penultimate performance of this years Allman Brothers Band Beacon Theater run proved to be guest-infused and breakout-laden. Three songs in particular garnered quite a buzz: Little Martha, ‘Blue Sky’ and ‘Jessica.’ Oteil Bubridge began quoting ‘Little Martha’ during his bass solos soon after he joined the band in 1997 but the composition had not received a full-on treatment for some time (while we at Jambands.com believed it has not been performed since Duane Allman passed away, review of the ABB Base suggests that the group did play it a few times during 1993). In addition Jessica, and ‘Blue Sky’ which seemingly had slipped into near-retired status following Dickey Betts departure from the group, closed out the first and second sets respectively. Both featured the guest appearance of Chuck Leavell which is fitting, as his keyboards were an integral part of these songs when Leavell joined the band in the post-Duane era. Leavell also appeared on a few other tunes including the version of Layla that served as the second encore. Prior to then, Page McConnell, Matt Abts guested on Southbound.’ The ABB will conclude their Beacon shows tonight as part of the Big House Foundation Benefit.
