For years, Mike Gordon has professed his love for proto-jamband Max Creek, tricking Phish into covering the groups Back Porch Boogie in the 80s by claiming the song as his own. As Phishs stature grew, Gordon began jamming with Max Creek on a regular basis, recruiting Max Creek guitarist Scott Murawski for his solo band in 2003. So its no surprise that the Vermont resident stopped by to see Max Creek perform Saturday at South Burlington, VTs Higher Ground with another old-friend, Gordon Stone, in-toe. First, Stone emerged for a version of the popular Max Creek original You’re The Only One, before Gordon joined onstage for Love Makes You Lose Your Mind and I Know You Rider. The duo returned during the groups encore for Henry and Free Born Man, which were tied together with a bass duel between Gordon and Max Creek bassist John Rider .
Max Creek performs next on February 17 at Portland, MEs Big Easy, while Gordons only confirmed date is an appearance at Bonnaroo with his new honky-tonk collective, Ramble Dove.
