On June 12, Medeski Martin & Wood will perform at New York Citys Capitale for the Marijuana Policy Project’s annual gala. The MMP is a nonprofit organization that works to minimize the harm associated with marijuana — both the consumption of marijuana and the laws that are intended to prohibit such use. MPP believes that the greatest harm associated with marijuana is prison. To this end, MPP focuses on removing criminal penalties for marijuana use, with a particular emphasis on making marijuana medically available to seriously ill people who have the approval of their doctors. Feted at the event will be Montel Williams as well as U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey and South Park character Towelie (okay, perhaps not Towelie). Tickets are $250 if purchased by May 31 with VIP tickets at $500 (both of which are tax-deductible for the price of each ticket minus $165).
