Last night, Phil Lesh debuted the latest incarnation of his rotating Friends at San Franciscos Warfield Theater. In addition to Lesh, the ensemble included recent Friends Joan Osborne (vocals), Rob Barraco (keyboards) and Larry Campbell (guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, mandolin), as well as stalwart drummer John Molo (who last performed with Lesh on New Years Eve at San Franciscos Bill Graham Civic Auditorium). Representing the jazz-realm, Greg Osby and John Scofield also joined Leshs lineup, as they will again at Bonnaroo in June. While Scofield—-who first joined the bassist for a two-day stint last December—-didnt dust off A Go Go, he did help Lesh through a handful of Grateful Dead-chestnuts including Shakedown Street, Mason’s Children, Scarlet Begonias, The Wheel, Dark Star and I Know You Rider. Phil Lesh will return to the Warfield Theater for an encore appearance tonight. For more on Leshs relationship with Osby, be sure to checkout our new interview with onetime friend Jimmy Herring below.
