On Friday and Saturday, String Cheese Incident’s Michael Travis’s Zilla hosted its first weekend event, Sonic Bloom, at Poudre Canyon, CO’s Mishawaka Amphitheatre. Improv was the key word of the day, with many of the weekend’s performances offering experimental, jam-laced sets.
The Funginears kicked off Friday’s activities, mashing its puppet show with DJ sounds. Later in the evening, Zilla offered its first set, with DJ OOOAH joining the improv-laced band. Bassnectar then performed before Zilla offered a second set which stretched until 3:45 AM.
Sasha Butterfly opened Saturday’s festivities, with Zilla’s Jamie Janover joining in their jam session. Other Saturday entertainment included a joint performance by the Funginears’ Jefe and Kyrian with guests Souleye and Sasha, an afternoon set from Zilla and an encore performance by Bassnectar. Finally, Zilla closed out the weekend’s festivities by hosting an open-jam featuring Travis’ String Cheese Incident percussion pal Jason Hann, DJ OOAH, Sasha, Souleye, and Kyrian and Jefe (Funginears). According to reports, the music stretched until 4:30 AM. Travis and Hann also used the Sonic Bloom festival to debut their new project End of Time Observatory performing two sets throughout the weekend. Zilla will perform Wednesday at Moline, IL’s Bent River Brewery.
