In November, Marco Benevento played five shows at New Yorks recently deceased avant-garde club Tonic. The weekly residency found the keyboardist playing with a variety of musicians, including Mike Gordon, JFJO bassist Reed Mathis, The Slips Brad Barr, RANA guitarist Scott Metzger, drummer Matt Chamberlain, percussionists Bobby Previte, Mike Dillon and Joe Russo, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, and Weens rhythm section (bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Claude Coleman). On August 7, Benevento will release Live at Tonic on Ropeadope records, which features highlights from his five-week run as a three-CD set. The collection boasts appearances from the abovementioned musicians and covers ranging from Pink Floyd’s ‘Fearless’ to Benny Goodman’s ‘Moonglow’ to Leonard Cohen’s ‘Seems So Long Ago Nancy’ to Thelonious Monk’s ‘Bye Ya.’ Benevento and Previte will perform together at New Yorks Swing Space this Saturday.
