On Tuesday Groove Collective and singer/songwriter Julian Velard shared the stage at New Yorks increasingly high-profile Highline Ballroom. Velard, who got his start playing downtown New York clubs like the Rockwood Music Hall, has recently inked a deal with the Chasisma/EMI and will release his EP The Movies Without You on Lucky Numbers in September. He will also spend the new several months in the studio working on his major label debut. In the past, Groove Collective drummer Genji Siraisi has also backed Velard. Fittingly, the seemingly strange bedfellows also collaborated twice on Tuesday. First, Groove Collective’s horn section (Jay Rodriguez, Curtis Fowlkes) and percussionist Chris Theberge helped Velard close his show with a version of Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel.’ Then Velard returned during Groove Collectives show for a cover of Bjork’s ‘Hyperballad.’ Velard will appear at Baltimore, MDs Rams Head Tavern tonight.
