Although Soulive recently slimmed down to its classic trio configuration, on Friday the jazz-funk group recruited the help of a former member for its performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Alto saxophonist Sam Kininger, who has performed with Soulive on and off over the years, took the stage with the band for a number of songs, including ‘Rudy’s Way,’ ‘Tuesday Night Squad,’ Steve Wonder’s ‘Jesus Children of America,’ ‘Do It Again’ and ‘Flurries.’ The group enjoyed Kininger’s company so much that they ‘kidnapped’ him for their performance the following night at Ithaca’s State Theatre. Soulive will perform next, possibly with bonus sax, at Troy, NY’s Revolution Hall on March 5.
