Earlier this year Medeski Martin & Wood announced that on three separate occasions in 2008, the trio would develop new material on the road and then immediately enter the studio to record it. The group has announced that it will release the results as the Radiolarian Series. The band explains that ‘Radiolarians (also radiolaria) are amoeboid protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons, typically with a central capsule dividing the cell into inner and outer portions, called endoplasm and ectoplasm.’ MMW likens its ongoing effort to the means by which ‘these ‘Unicellular Planktonic Marine Organisms’ grow their intricately beautiful patterned skeleton around their soft core in defiance of normal biological process.’ The process will continue during the second leg of the band’s Viva La Evolution Tour which will begin on July 11 at the All Good Festival and continue through July 18 at Louisville’s Bomhard Theatre.
