On Halloween 1981, Frank Zappa brought his current touring band to New York City’s Palladium. For this show Zappa was joined by Ray White, Steve Vai, Bobby Martin, Tommy Mars, Ed Mann, Scott Thunes and Chad Wackerman. The performance was recorded by multiple cameras and Zappa himself edited the resulting film, which was broadcast on MTV. The Zappa Family Trust has now released The Torture Never Stops on DVD, along with bonus footage of ‘Teen-Age Prostitute’ and ‘City of Tiny Lights’ as well as the ‘You Are What You Is’ music video. The Palladium show offers 24 songs over two hours including a notable exchange on guitar between Zappa and Vai on ‘Stevie’s Spanking.’
