As many suspected, Sharon Jones made a surprise appearance last night at an
Obama benefit held at Brooklyn, NY’s Southpaw. Billed as ‘The Daptone
Family Fundraiser for Obama,’ the evening’s confirmed acts included
Daptone artists the Budos Band, Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens,
Honeydripper, TNT and Neal Sugarman. After a few onstage hints from the
members of the Budos Band, Jones and the Dap-Kings emerged for a short
stealth set that hinged on politically-charged numbers like ‘This Land Is Your
Land.’ Jones also openly endorsed Obama from the stage.
Jones is at home to perform at celebrity blogger Perez Hilton’s CMJ party
this evening. The performance will take place at New York’s Highline
Ballroom and also will include appearances by Yo Majesty, Semi Precious Weapons,
Lady Gaga and Hilton himself. Members of the Daptone family have been
making the CMJ rounds for the past few days: Earlier this week the Daptone
DJs performed at a party held at Bowery Electric and the Dap-Kings backed
Mark Ronson collaborator Daniel Merriweather at New York’s S.O.B’s.
