Furthur Bounces Back Strong

A number of reports suggested that Furthur’s performance on Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre Times Square was less than ideal. Complaints about the sound as well as Bob Weir’s difficulties with lyrics (more so than usual) marred the performance for a number of individuals. However, the second time proved the charm for many concertgoers.

Phil Lesh is said to have addressed the previous night at the beginning of the show, in stating “Never drink out of something you haven’t poured yourself” and then hugging Weir, implying that someone had dosed Weir the previous night. Whether this was true was not, the sound was improved and the band came out crisp and inspired on an initial run from “Dancing in the Streets” into “Celebration,” “Alligator” and then “Tennessee Jed.” A bit later, the set closing sequence from “Mississippi Half Step” into “Let It Grow” was quite strong as well. The second set opened with the classic late-era Jerry Garcia tune, “So Many Roads,” and then a fully-segued sequence followed, starting with “Seven Hills Of Gold” and then into “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” verse one of “Dark Star,” “Unbroken Chain,” “The Other One,” “The Eleven,” “Death Don’t Have No Mercy,” verse two of “Dark Star” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad.” Furthur wrapped things up with “And We Bid You Goodnight” before a “Touch of Grey” encore.

Tonight it’s on to the Gathering of the Vibes for the band.

You just never know when one of those Pranksters might show up and send the whole show into a tailspin. Seems like old times.

I was there last night, and can honestly say Bobby was right on point. Death Don’t Have No Mercy was incredible!!! Check out www.adamhandman.com for some great pics and HD videos up close!

Who is actually really listening to this music? And who will put these tunes on for a spin 20 years from now as opposed to old, good GD? All of you older people still going to these shows are still searching for something and it isn’t there, man. Let it go, and move on for godssake. How many of you are still single?

in response to TTK^, Furthur has taken the music further; this became truly apparent to me at the Angel’s Camp shows. The best I’ve seen since Jerry was still with us. i’m sorry you don’t (can’t?) get it, but for the rest of us, there’s nothin’ left to do but smile, smile, smile. and by the way, the Rhythm Devils are taking it further, too. :) and i am totally psyched for Golden Gate Furthur!!!

I have to agree with stone lamb. These shows are a blast. And the music sounds wonderful. Yes, we know its not the Grateful Dead. This band is taking a whole new approach to the music, exploring it in new ways. And I’ll probably listen to these shows 20 years from now, just like I listen to old Dead shows, and live shows from other new bands…like Furthur.

Bobby, love ya to death, but please stick to the songs you know. Spiked drink or not. yeah, but the song he had the most trouble with on 7/28 was El Paso. I don’t buy the spiked-drink rumor … I think Phil started it to cover for his friend … but hopefully whatever was wrong Weds night has cleared up. Go get em Bob!

Response to TTK... Who is listening to this music? Well, ME, for one. And, with all due respect, I bet I’m having way more fun than you. Just a guess, of course.

Let’s face it, Bobby shouldn’t sing Jerry’s tunes. Plan and simple. He doesn’t remember the lyrics, not that Jerry didn’t flub here and there, but whether it was with Warren, Joan or now John, let the person you bring in to do Jerry’s guitar parts sing his parts too. Bobby, love ya to death, but please stick to the songs you know. Spiked drink or not.

Lets face it. Weir is a drunk and has been a substance abuser for many years. What can you expect out of pig except a grunt. Hope and pray he can get shown the light.

Cleese and Eric, check it … 386 times the Dead performed that song with Weir doing vocals and Jerry performing harmony beginning in ’69. Don’t think not knowing the lyrics was the issue. Seen him do that song numerous times since ’95 as well. Peace.

Further @ The Mann in Philly had major sound troubles the first few tunes 1st night, for those not in seats. 2nd night was a real good time. The show was a memory of days past, the woods surrounding the Mann were RFK style camped out. So, a spiked drink? That explains purple pj’s, rag clothing and awesome head of hair, uh, you know, the facial gorrilla. It is what it is and was what it was, so proliphic from a touch of grey head (first shows in the late ’80s, and darn lucky). I felt Weird b/c of fake jerry and all, sure does play a mean guitar. Also- 1st night at mann was the 2nd concert of that same day, 3rd in 24 or so hours at the time!!! Who are the haters calling old and in the way? I don’t know too many humans in good enough health to do this at half their ages. Peace. Love. Sh**4Brains, a few horse pills, who knows…how can you complain….they are ALIVE...enjoy the show or go to plenty of other talented offspring bands to see, check ‘em all out and smile. Thanks.

First of all—Jabco; What the hell are you talking about? Secondly, I was at both shows. Bobby was a complete disaster Wednesday night, for whatever reason(s). It was very disturbing. Much more than just forgetting lyrics. I actually thought he was going to fall over right on stage. Many in the crowd were actually concerned about his health, like maybe he was having a stroke or something. Jambands.com has really glossed over this disaster. Wednesday was much more of a story than Thursday. Thursday was very good, with some real highlights. I’m not as crazy about this band as some, but Thursday WAS a real strong comeback.
