As previously reported, Surprise Me Mr. Davis’ December 27 performance at Falls River, MA’s The Narrows was canceled when singer/guitarist Nathan Moore and keyboardist Marco Benevento were unable to attend the show due to weather-related transportation problems. The band’s three other members—guitarist Brad Barr, bassist Marc Friedman and drummer Andrew Barr—decided to perform anyway as their other band, The Slip.

Before the show Andrew Barr collected Slip song requests. (“If we can remember how to play them,” Brad Barr joked.) The group discussed the requests backstage and worked the selections into a two-set show. The resulting show surveyed the band’s entire career—from the band’s jazz-influenced 1997 studio debut From the Gecko (“Weight of Solomon,” “”Yellow Medicine”) to 2006’s indie-centric Eisenhower (“Children of December,” “If One of Us Should Fall,” “Soft Machine,” “Paper Birds”). Other standouts included “Before You Were Born,” “Poor Boy,” “Predicting the Rain,” “Reddish Moon,” “Driving Backwards with Your” and “Mr. Meowskers.” The group also performed “Give the Devil Back His Heart” from The Barr Brothers’ self-titled debut album as well as “Autobody Experience” (a request by the Barrs’ father).

The Slip will perform at San Francisco’s Cafe Du Nord on December 30.
