Phil Lesh and Friends Celebrate Jerry’s 70th at Terrapin Crossroads

Phil Lesh and a group of his musical peers honored what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 70th birthday with a special performance last night at Terrapin Crossroads. In addition to Lesh, the evening featured a number of Terrapin Crossroads regulars including Lesh’s sons Brian (mandolin) and Grahame (guitar keyboards), along with Jackie Greene (keyboards, guitar), Mark Karan (guitar), Ross James (guitar, pedal steel) and John Molo (drums). Also on hand for the evening—although they did not perform—were Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist Neal Casal, and Chris Robinson Brotherhood/Black Crowes multi-instrumentalist Adam MacDougall.

The performance consisted entirely of Grateful Dead classics, including many Garcia-sung favorites like “Deal,” “Dire Wolf,” “Peggy-O,” “Cold Rain & Snow,” “Sugaree,” “Loser,” “The Wheel,” “Eyes of the World,” and “So Many Roads.” Prior to the double encore, Lesh and the rest of the musicians (including those who did not perform) handed out cupcakes to those in the audience in honor of Garcia’s 70th.

Here’s a look at the setlist from last night as it appears in our Box Scores section.

They did not play Peggy O last night. They played Jack-a-Roe. After Liberty they sang Happy Birthday to Jerry.

Article fails to mention the most important aspect of the evening, which was Phil’s prepared talk about Jerry as the band took the stage. Phil spoke about his relationship with Jerry and about some of his most beloved characteristics of the man we all miss. He also told about how he’s felt Jerry’s presence on this plane of existence. Was very sweet and special. But WTF – Jerry’s 70th bday doesn’t deserve 2 sets?????? And a big bummer to have Casal and cactus in the audience and not play! Oh well, fun night overall.

^ And yes, not peggy-o – jack-a-roe. The band honestly, was just ok. Turned a corner at Sugaree I think, but not the tightest or best music in the world last night.

1st of all it was “only one set”, yes but it was a set that lasted almost 2 and a half hrs (that is 2 and a half normal sets…) Last night was beautiful from start to finish, the jaded reviews on here are in poor taste for as special an experience we were privy to last night, I will remember it until I die and am eternally grateful to Phil for sharing with us in as raw and humble a way as he did.

Last nights show for Jerry’s 70th was anything but Phil and his family and friends trying to be spot on and super tight.. it was a special historical moment for our community at large to reflect on the man and his genius. Nothing more and nothing less. Phil’s heartfelt talk before the show started was beyond even his own words,, as he stated.. and his comment at the end of Donor Rap in which he stated..” We started the night with the first song we ever rehearsed and will end the night with the two last songs we ever played together”.. which were Black Muddy River and Box Of Rain was HISTORIC – period. It was the double encore from the last show the Grateful Dead ever played at Soldier Field in Chicago 7-9-95. And if that isn’t worth the $25.00 ticket into TXR’s to see a two hour show for the ages.. I don’t know what is. LOVE IS REAL.. NOT FADE AWAY..!!!

It certainly was a special evening and I was glad to be there, but to me, the quality of the music is an aspect of a concert worth commenting on. Sorry if anyone disagrees or thinks it is in bad taste. My experience doesn’t invalidate your experience. But I’ve seen cover bands that sound better than half that show. At sugaree we turned a corner and it picked up. And my highlight by far was the vibe and Phil’s talk about Jerry. Your mileage may vary.

It was wonderful. For the naysayers, I don’t get it. This is a partially living musical phenom that continues to morph through yet another generation. Perfect? I suppose not, but therein lies the beauty of the dead in all its manifestations. It was live and it provided 5 hours of absolutely smooth nostalgia. Well done and thanks to those that put it on my digital playground.
