Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, Keith Carlock and Etienne Mbappe are The Ringers

As previously reported, Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, Keith Carlock and Etienne Mbappe will tour together in early 2013. The ensemble has now confirmed some additional information about their collaboration and some new upcoming dates.

The five musicians—who represent such divergent genres as rock, funk, jazz, blues and African music—are calling themselves The Ringers. The idea came from Abstract Logix label founder Souvik Dutta. The concept was to bring five guys together, not to just perform as a super-group, but to work “as a unifying artistic force, one where people put music ahead of their egos to collectively create great music.” The Ringers will offer new material written exclusively for this band, as well as each individual’s solo material and covers tunes chosen by the players.

The group will kick off their brief run in Athens, GA on February 19.

The Ringers’ upcoming dates

February 19 Athens, GA—Georgia Theatre
February 20 Charlotte, NC—Neighborhood Theatre
February 21 Raleigh, NC—Lincoln Theatre
February 22 New York, NY—BB Kings Blues Club
February 23 Washington DC—Howard Theatre

I assume most people on here know Mr. Herring, but you may not be hip to Krantz and Landau. Wayne Krantz has literally forged his own path with rhythmically-based improvisation (He is a guitarist). He also had a stint with Steely Dan. Landau has played with Miles, Joni, J. Taylor, Seal and many others. His solo stuff tends to be Jimi-inspired rock, sometimes vocal, oftentimes not. Check both of them out. Etienne is a monster bass player who most recently played with John McLaughlin, and Keith Carlock is just one of the scariest Mo-fo’s ever heard on drums. Groove is king with him, no matter how complex the rhythm. Driving over 1,000 miles to catch one of these nights. Do yourself a favor and see one of these shows. Blooby

Krantz and Carlock were playing the 55 Bar in NYC since the mid 90s. I went one night and Donald Fagen was sitting in on keys ( to check out Keith). Also in attendance were John Scofield, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell. Pretty cool. A few months later Krantz and Carlock were touring with Steely Dan.
