My Morning Jacket Go Cover Crazy In Boston

My Morning Jacket covered a number of classic songs last night at the Agganis Arena in Boston during the final show of their New Year’s Eve run. The band kicked off their set with a few fan-favorites like “Outta My System,” “I’m Amazed” and “Off The Record.” The first cover to make an appearance was Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” which was followed by “Victory Dance.” Concertgoers were treated to “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream” parts 1 and 2 in the middle of the set, which came to a close with Wilson Pickett’s “Midnight Hour” and Chuck Berry’s “You Can Never Tell.”

However, the covers really came out during the encore, which began with “One Big Holiday,” followed by renditions of Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long,” Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration,” the band’s debut of Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” and The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah.” In a recent Relix interview, frontman Jim James mentions that he recently saw Springsteen live and the show made him feel like “the most worthless excuse for” a performer. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined the members of My Morning Jacket for a portion of their set, including their New Year’s covers. As midnight approached, a huge bottle of champagne appeared in front of the stage and some Sesame Street countdown music was played over the PA.

In addition to the fantastic performance from My Morning Jacket, fans were also treated to Jim James cameos on a few Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s songs during their opening set like “St. James Infirmary” and Jimmie Rodgers’ “Those Gambler Blues.” As previously reported, My Morning Jacket also played three straight nights at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY December 27-29 in the run up to their New Year’s Eve show.

By covering “Celebration”, MMJ has once again proved that they are the lamest band in the world
