Pearl Jam continued their tour last night with the second of two shows at Los Angeles, CA’s Memorial Sports Arena. Convinced by Bruce Springsteen to play the arena that sits besides the famed LA Coliseum which plays home to the USC Trojans football team, Pearl Jam delivered one of their most unique and surprising sets of the tour.

Opening with the rare Ten cut “Oceans,” the band mixed in a rare amount of covers as well as originals that hadn’t seen the light of day in quite some time. The first cover came in the form of “Intersellar Overdrive,” which has made its way into the setlists over the last week. New cuts dominated the first half of the set, with Lightning Bolt tunes “My Fathers Son,” “Swallowed Whole,” “Infallible” and the title track all appearing in the first fifteen songs. The end of the set brought the next surprise, as Yield’s “No Way” appeared for just the eleventh time ever and the first time since the band’s 20th anniversary celebration at Alpine Valley. The frantic “Blood” closed the set.

After avoiding some of their better known songs in the main set, the first encore kicked off with two of them—“Better Man” and “Daughter.” The latter of which featured an “Another Brick in the Wall” tag. After that, the band left the stage, leaving only Eddie Vedder and his guitar. The frontman reminisced about time he spent in New York with the late Lou Reed following the Roskilde incident, where Pearl Jam was forced to cancel their set following the death of several people in the front row. Roskilde is an incident that has often been pointed to as a turning point in the band’s history. Vedder then proceeded to pay tribute once again to the fallen idol, performing Reed’s “After Hours.” The first encore closed with a thrilling trio of tunes, the rare “Breath,” “Go” and “Porch.”

While there would be no guest on “Rockin’ in the Free World” this time, the band still spiced up the second encore by performing to the crowd behind the stage for “Last Kiss” as well as sneaking in a surprise cover of The Who’s “Love, Reign O’er Me.” Pearl Jam’s tour continues tomorrow night in Oakland, CA.
