After spending their past few New Year’s Eves in North Carolina (2011, 2012) and Colorado (2010) Widespread Panic returned to their state of origin last night. The group performed at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia where they had last taken the stage together for NYE on December 31, 2009. Like that show, last night’s performance featured a guest appearance by the Megablasters horns, who appeared for much of the second and third sets. Panic has typically debuted cover songs on New Year’s Eve and last night was no different. The group opened with a cover of Neil Young’s “Journey Through The Past” and also performed first-ever takes on Young’s “Time Fades Away” the Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House” and a version of “Let The Good Times Roll.” Old friend Randall Bramblett guested on “Pickin’ Up The Pieces” during the first set and also joined Panic and the horns for such selections as “Devil In Disguise,” “Tail Dragger,” “Bust It Big” and “You Should Be Glad.” Paul D’augustino joined Panic and the horns on keys during “Surprise Valley” while Madison Smith, Eric Bice and John Switzer appeared on percussion for “Spill The Wine.”
