RatDog May Change Their Name

Bob Weir says that RatDog may change their name soon. Speaking on yesterday’s episode of Sirius XM’s Tales From The Golden Road, the guitarist told David Gans and Gary Lambert:

[Steve Kimock is] part and parcel of our effort to more or less reinvent RatDog. This will have to be a work in progress over a sustained period of time. I think one of the things we can do to kick that off is to go back to our old name Scaring The Children, which I think we’re going to do this year.

Weir later told the hosts, “RatDog—soon to be Scaring The Children again—we’ll be back in the Seattle area soon enough.”

As previously reported, Bob Weir and RatDog will kick off their first tour since 2009 at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA this Friday, February 14. The band also recently took the stage at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, CA

I guess ‘Ratdog’ was starting to get autocorrected to ‘The Sonic Equivalent of Hangover Shits’ on everyone’s smartphone.

Joedy LeGault February 10, 2014, 13:48:53

And then please change it again after scaring children or whatever

Bryan February 10, 2014, 14:12:10

“Bobby and the midnites”..is what I like

robert February 10, 2014, 14:16:52

I like Bobby drops the ego and joins the rest of the Dead for a tour instead of all these side projects playing the same songs!

Kent February 10, 2014, 14:23:15

How ‘bout “The Shut the Fuck Up Band”

Kent February 10, 2014, 14:24:32

Bobby’s been the one quoted in the press recently about getting the Dead back together for a 50th anniversary thing.

mike February 10, 2014, 14:33:53

Deadspread February 10, 2014, 14:56:10

William Hinch February 10, 2014, 15:14:59

Not scaring the children, c’mon! Stupid colloquialism if that even, and about being uber cool to an inner sanctum but really is pissing in the wind in creating any positivism as far as perception to your audience Leave it Rat Dog or Bobby Weir Band or something at least has a neutral or positive resonance!

GratefulJO February 10, 2014, 16:21:37

It’s his band. He can name it whatever the f*#k he wants too. Deal with it people. When you start a band you can call it what you want.

Alliuman February 10, 2014, 16:22:50

Why don’t you all just stop the hate and listen to the music? Good grief, get over yourselves!

Shabadoo February 10, 2014, 16:29:29

I thought Scaring the Children was Bob, Jay Lane and Rob Wasserman? Doesn’t make sense to rename Ratdog when a distinct lineup has played under that moniker.

Love you Bob but scaring the children really?

drasticjasper February 10, 2014, 17:29:01

No matter what he calls it they are still going to play lame versions at dirge speed…the only way Bobby could play any slower is if he just stopped still entirely

eaglesmoeron February 10, 2014, 17:47:18

steve kimock and friends band

Brian Martin February 10, 2014, 17:57:14

Have a fan contest to pick the new name of the band!!!! Scaring The Children is not a good name~!

Kris February 10, 2014, 18:07:58

In response to whoever said RatDog didn’t make any sense. The name came about in 1995 when the band started rehearsing. weir was born in the Chinese year of the rat 1994 was the year of the dog=ratdog

Matt February 10, 2014, 18:58:29

WHY SO SERIOUS

John C. February 10, 2014, 19:06:59

Why not borrow from Phil and call it
“Bob Weir and Friends”
Or from Ringo and call it
“Bob Weir and his Allstar Band”
It seems that the other musicians change with the tour and location so this would work.

Jo February 10, 2014, 19:21:18

What about the 2nd hand dirty clothing band
In honor of bobby wearing the same pants and tee
Shirt since 2007 ??!

NKP February 10, 2014, 19:36:23

Bobby Has Dementia

Robert Piggott February 10, 2014, 20:15:10

How about we get back to Furthur so the other can make a living? Love Bobby but he is going to stretch himself too thin…

rick doyle February 10, 2014, 21:45:00

make the bands name …weirdeaddog

Scott Robinson February 10, 2014, 22:58:12

It should be “Weir is f-ing awesome”

Eric D February 10, 2014, 23:20:12

Hell yeah, Weirwolves. I will if Bobby won’t.

Ryder February 11, 2014, 00:51:39

Jambien

gordon February 11, 2014, 01:13:31

Scaring the children? Weir have you been Bobby? It’s the children that are scary nowadays.

Donna February 11, 2014, 02:56:20

Why even change the name of the band?

Jay February 11, 2014, 04:59:14

I love Steve Kimock and my favorite guitar player alive but we all know his track record , how long will he survive in this band ? That is if he wants to . Steve does what Steve wants , So before you change the name think about that

Cappy j February 11, 2014, 07:16:57

(Old?) Weirdos

jazzfester February 11, 2014, 09:55:22

This is great news. I have always wanted to call my band “Ratdog.” Once these guys are through with the name, I can use it. Isn’t there a current band out there called “The Warlocks”?

ChynaKat February 11, 2014, 11:39:12

Scaring The Children?....seriously! That scares this child of the Dead! RatDog is a Weir-ed name but I like “The Weirwolves”. That’s an awesome name! Yes it’s his band and he can name it what he wants. But if you want to make a “name for yourself’ choose a band name your deadicated fans can relate to. And I agree, Steve won’t stick around for long. We all know Steve does what’s best for Steve, as he should. He’s a talented “young” man. Scaring the Children… I think Bob wil be Scarring a few children! Ha!

MarkK February 11, 2014, 13:27:49

Why no Mark Karan? Haven’t heard much about him lately. He was a great part of Ratdog.

joe February 11, 2014, 14:06:34

i think with the loss of karan and brooks or ellis or any sax, the “ratdog sound” will be different enough that it warrents a new moniker.
that said, i think “scaring the children” while may seem alil dark, consider that “grateful dead” is dark in its own right, and not all acid trips or parts of self descovery are happy colored flowers, some scare the hell outa children. and they become adults, or dont. SCARING THE KIDS=AWSOME NAME!!!!
what do hyou guys want?
its about the music, not the labels.

Mike February 11, 2014, 14:19:55

It’s not about the name, it’s about the music. I think Bobby thinks the music had to be good enough to overcome a ridiculous name. This band by any name is killer, don’t go in with with preconceptions based on the, just go and listen. You won’t be disappointed.

MalcolmO February 11, 2014, 16:32:46

Barlow told me he’s wanted Bob to change the name for years and even gave him oodles of potential names. If Bob’s gonna change Ratdog’s name, he should pick one of the names Barlow suggested and settle that issue.

Ethan Allen February 11, 2014, 16:55:04

The band should be renamed Weir Bob with a question mark.

Los aileron February 11, 2014, 20:44:12

Bobby Bingo and his Dark Star Dingy Ding Dingos

mb February 13, 2014, 21:20:08

Scaring the Children is a great name. It’s got the irony thing going. It’s dis-associative. Like being grateful and dead or a stone that is rolling. And it flown easily off the tongue.

RockinChuck February 13, 2014, 23:39:18

How bout Bobby & The Mags (short for magnolias)

connor February 14, 2014, 05:17:40

I think scaring the children is a super funny name it’s not like he’s gonna start playing shitty hardcore the weirwolves would be dope too

godhand February 16, 2014, 03:14:47

When I first saw Bob & Rob, the marquee on the Ventura Theatre said “Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman are Scaring The Children” . It was not a good thing. Songs played included twilight time & misty. From that point forth, they were known to us as “The Lounge Lizards”. There have previously been gigs billed as “Bob Weir & Friends”.When Jerry was not dead.

dj February 16, 2014, 07:30:39

I need to agree with Joe (previous post). Ratdog at it’s best had much to do with Kenny Brooks and Karan. While most of the droves were siding with Phil/Warren doing their thing I always swan upstream and preferred the jazzier aspect of Ratdog to the screeching slide of the other guys. Ratdog got really tight for a bunch of years but the jury is out on Kimock and the 2 bass players?. Peach was really pretty sloppy despite Grace and all that- but it was also the maiden voyage.
People need to either accept the tempo Bobby wants to play nowadays or go see somebody else, it is what it is.

LeeN February 20, 2014, 06:33:59

Bobby and the Teleprompters.

pm February 21, 2014, 14:23:17

He’d change it to The Grateful Dead if he could get away with it

Peter Naughton February 22, 2014, 11:43:11

Old Time Deadhead March 10, 2014, 11:11:36

Ratdog / Scaring the Children are rockin’ this tour! Great to see and hear Kimock! back with the band. Jay Lane is a thousand times improved; his time back with Primus did him some serious good. At times I was like how is Jay sounding like two drummers, like the Rhythm Devils? Then there is the Wass, gret to have him back ala Bob & Rob again. Sure it would be nice to see and hear the Core Four again, but Ratdog blows Further away. Kimock blows Kadlecik away! I say keep Ratdog / Scaring the Children Bobby, thanks!
