Wilco, The String Cheese Incident, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gregg Allman, Weezer, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Billy & The Kids and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are among the acts slated to appear at the 20th annual Gathering of the Vibes. The Grateful Dead-inspired event will return to Bridgeport, CT’s Seaside Park from July 30-August 2.

The festival’s initial lineup also includes: The Gaslight Anthem, The Word, Zappa Plays Zappa, The Dark Star Orchestra Featuring Melvin Seals, Greensky Bluegrass, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Deep Banana Blackout, Strangefolk, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Kung Fu, Twiddle, Turkuaz, The Nth Power, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Moon Hoch, The Primate Fiasco, David Gans and a world peace ceremony.

The Gathering of the Vibes was founded in 1996 as Deadhead Heaven: A Gathering of the Tribe and served as a tribute to Jerry Garcia, who had passed away the previous summer. With the Grateful Dead off the road, the festival helped keep the band’s spirit alive at a time when many Deadheads were looking to maintain a sense of community. Vibes nurtured the modern jamband and festival scenes in the late ‘90s and, since Bob Weir first appeared in 2000, has regularly booked the surviving members of the Dead and their various projects. (In addition to Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Tom Constanten, Donna Jean Godchaux and touring member Bruce Hornsby have all taken the stage at various times.)

While Gathering of the Vibes has inched outside of the traditional jamband scene in recent years—including appearances by Jane’s Addiction, Elvis Costello, Mates Of State, James Murphy and Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros—this year’s headliners are particularly eclectic. Wilco, who have shown their love of the Dead through collaborations with Weir and guitarist Nels Cline’s stints with Lesh, will make their Vibes debut while Weezer will stake claim as the festival’s first marquee punk-pop name. Indie-punk act The Gaslight Anthem and the recently reunited Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals also have spots near the top of the festival’s bill.

This year also marks the first time jam-scene mainstays The String Cheese Incident have performed at Gathering of the Vibes and the first time Gregg Allman has appeared at the festival with his solo band. Meanwhile, Tedeschi Trucks and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will arrive in Bridgeport on 2015 joint summer tour.

However, the festival will still honor the Grateful Dead during their 50th anniversary year. Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann will perform with his current project Billy & The Kids, which features Brothers Past/American Babies guitarist Tom Hamilton, Tea Leaf Green bassist Reed Mathis and Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner. (The Vibes are responsible for hooking Kreutzmann and Hart up with the Disco Biscuits at last year’s festival.) Dead brother band New Riders of The Purple Sage, The Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans and Dead tribute project The Dark Star Orchestra are also all on the bill. (Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals will perform the latter project.)

Gathering of the Vibes will nod to its own milestone, too. Notably Strangefolk, veterans of the inaugural Vibes and a regular presence ever since, will play an increasingly rare reunion gig. Vibes’ hometown band Deep Banana Blackout, who broke through to a national audience after their 1997 set, will also play one of only a handful of 2015 dates at the 20th anniversary celebration.

Additional acts will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
