The Black Keys announced today that their Australia, New Zealand and Japan tour dates have been cancelled following a shoulder injury suffered by drummer Patrick Carney in January. All dates from April 2 in Brisbane to April 23 in Tokyo have been cancelled. The band is currently planning to return to the stage May 28 in Barcelona, ESP when they headline Primavera Sound.

The band previously cancelled their European tour following the injury. The band eyed a return to the stage in Australia but will not do so as Carney needs additional time to heal.

In a statement posted to their website, the band says “the recovery process and physical therapy has taken longer than anticipated and unfortunately Patrick is still unable to perform and needs additional time to heal.”

All tickets will be refunded at their point of purchase. For Byron Bay Bluesfest refund policies, visit the festival’s website. The band also noted that they do not anticipate to have to cancel any dates beyond April 23 when they return.

We are very sorry to have to cancel our upcoming performances through April 23. Patrick sustained a dislocated and broken shoulder in January that required surgery. Working with the doctors, surgeons and physiotherapists since January, we had expected Patrick to be ready to return to touring in April. The recovery process and physical therapy has taken longer than anticipated and unfortunately Patrick is still unable to perform and needs additional time to heal. We thank all of our fans for their ongoing support and we look forward to getting back on the road as soon as possible.
