In a year-end recap on his Facebook page, Bruce Hornsby revealed that he and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon recorded a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” for The National’s long-awaited Dead compilation.

Vernon, whose music is highly influenced by and often compared to Hornsby’s, welcomed the keyboardist to his home town of Eu Claire, WI to work on the cover back in April of this year.

Hornsby is a mainstay in the Grateful Dead community, having played with the band as a guest and touring member off and on starting in 1988. He also took part in this summer’s Fare Thee Well performances.
