After taking a break from their annual New Year’s Eve run at New York’s Madison Square Garden last year when they rang in 2015 in Miami, Phish returned to their rightful NYE venue last night with the first of their four-night run.

Just a few months after closing out what proved to be an impressive summer tour, the guys wasted no time in jumping back into things, coming out with a high-energy first set that kicked off the run with “Sample in a Jar.” The opening frame also included a two-song run of Fuego tunes, “Waiting All Night” and “555” before a strong “Roggae” and finally the Chilling, Thrilling Sounds cut “The Dogs” that gave way to set closer “46 Days.”

The quartet burst back onstage for the second set with an epic “Chalk Dust Torture” that cycled through intertwining jams that stretched the song to over 20 minutes, the longest of the night. The band then immediately jumped into “Ghost” that segued into a debut original, “Can’t Always Listen,” before settling back into “Ghost” for a short jam.

Phish continued the impressive and seamless second set rollout with a big “Bathtub Gin” the ran into “Mike’s Song” and “Bouncing Around the Room.” The band wasn’t quite done, as they jumped into a “Weekapaug Groove” that featured an appearance of “What’s the Use” stuck in the middle. To round out the stacked setlist for the night, the group returned to the stage for a classic encore of “Character Zero.”

Phish return to the Madison Square Garden stage tonight for their New Year’s Eve performance.
