Dead & Company concluded their four show New Year’s run last night at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. The night featured three sets of music, including an inspired, fully segued second set. For many folks, however, the highlight came with a non-musical moment. Near the close of the evening before the “Brokedown Palace” encore, John Mayer addressed the crowd directly, thanking them for their acceptance. He then suggested “at the risk of rocking any boats” that “we’ll see you next year.”

The show started with Bob Weir on vocals for “Feel Like A Stranger,” with Mayer singing lead on “They Love Each Other” which followed. Mayer also handled leads on crowd-pleaser “Sugaree” which preceded “Hell In a Bucket’” at the set’s conclusion.

Set two opened with an richly textured “Dark Star” which eventually led into “Uncle John’s Band” and then on through “Terrapin Station” which gave way to “Drums,” “Space” and a concluding take on The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.”

New Year’s Eve arrived at the onset of the third set, which began with the fitting “Midnight Hour.” From here, a rather tall Father Time (reminiscent of Bill Walton in a beard and robes) emerged, along with iconic Hollywood figures Groucho Marx and Marilyn Monroe, to the sounds of the Star Wars theme. With the new year fully greeted, Dead & Company then returned to action. The music once again continued without a break as the group performed “Sugar Magnolia,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Touch of Grey,” “Fire On The Mountain” and “St. Stephen” before bringing things full circle with “Sunshine Daydream.”

The night concluded with a “Brokedown Palace” encore preceded by Mayer’s remarks which suggested that the song’s opening lines of “fare you well” were just a temporary proclamation and not a final one.
